http://tribes.tribe.net/outnow#

Massive U.S. intervention in Afghanistan began in 1978 and continues to this day. The ongoing war in Afghanistan continues to kill thousands of Afghan civilians and cause extreme suffering due to horrendous injuries, the displacement of people from their homes and livelihoods, home invasions, sexual abuse, arbitrary arrests and torture, and the general humiliation of the Afghani people.

As this author stated for Liberation News on September 12, 2001:

“Americans watched in horror as the World Trade Center collapsed. Yet it was a horror no different from what the U.S. government has done with it's bombing of civilian populations in Iraq, Yugoslavia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Korea. The U.S. bombings of just these countries, not to mention many other U.S. acts of war, murdered millions of civilians. Terror against civilians is never justified…

“Today the clerical fascists of the Taliban rule Afghanistan. The CIA put them in power with billions of dollars in U.S. military aid. This massive U.S. intervention in Afghanistan was in opposition to the revolutionary PDPA government that came to power in 1978 on issues of promoting women’s rights and land reform. Literacy campaigns began teaching the poor and women how to read and write.

“Foreign religious fanatics and wealthy defenders of the old feudal system came together in a terrorist organization called the Mujahideen. With billions of dollars in assistance from the U.S. [starting under the Jimmy Carter presidency] these fanatical cutthroats waged a holy war that included killing women for teaching little girls how to read and write and throwing acid into the faces of women who had become liberated from the veil. The Taliban came to power as a result of this U.S. intervention.

“Will a U.S. war now against the Taliban and former CIA aid recipient Osama Bin Laden set things straight? No. It will be the people of Afghanistan who suffer death and destruction from war as the U.S. attempts to install a puppet government friendly to U.S. corporate [oil pipeline] interests.” Steven Argue, Liberation News, September 12, 2001

The Taliban was put in power by U.S. intervention. U.S. occupation today is a cause for war and continues to keep an extremely reactionary religious government in power. Afghanistan had secular governments with much wider women's rights before the U.S. began its massive intervention in Afghanistan in the 1970's. All U.S. imposed governments have been religious and anti-women. In Afghanistan, the Afghanis are better qualified to solve the problems caused by U.S. imperialism than U.S. imperialism is.

Yet rather than get out of Afghanistan Obama and McCain are proposing more troops, more helicopters, and more war.

NO TO THE BIPARTISAN OCCUPATION OF AFGHANISTAN!!!!

NO TO OBAMA and MCCAIN'S PROPOSED SURGE IN AFGHANISTAN!

U.S. OUT OF AFGHANISTAN NOW!

Call to Artists

An all day performance event is being planned for May 31st in Santa Cruz starting early noon and continuing until sun down. This event will happen at San Lorenzo Park, an outside public space adjacent to downtown Santa Cruz and surrounded by residential neighborhoods. The intention of this event is to explore interventionist performance art and create space for collaboration and improvisation. By interventionism we bring performances outside the theatre space and place them in a public setting for the creation of community. Collaboration and improvisation will support the role of the performer, dropping the role of audience member.
The blueprint of the event encourages spontaneous performance areas and will include:
•	An open forum for artists whose performances call for a more spontaneous, site specific environment
•	A main stage
•	Band creation area – with musical instruments and encouraged experimental band performances
•	Workshop area
•	Task oriented improvisational scores to participate in and perform for one another
•	Trade area for artisans (non-monetary)
•	Artists who have still-art are welcomed to install their work within the space
Those who contact ahead of time will have the choice to be scheduled into the main stage area and are also encouraged to take their performances outside the main stage for a shift of interaction. Even though this opportunity is offered, our hope is that it will not subtract from the spontaneity of the event or create separation between audience and performer.
We encourage those who perform to teach a workshop during the day to share ideas and art disciplines. The content of the workshop can be connected to your specific performance but is not required to be. There will be a workshop board to write down the time and content of the workshop. Do not be discouraged to perform if you would prefer not to teach a workshop, the workshop is not required but appreciated.
This event is free. Please do not expect to pay for performances, workshops, and entry; or to be paid. This space is for all to share performance and empower one another through teaching and critiquing.
Due to the size of the space and structure of the event we are asking for there to be no amplified music. Sorry if this comes as an inconvenience for some.
If your performance contains fire or open flame please contact us for further notice.

This is a collaborative effort and we want to hear your ideas as well. As much as this email might make the organization sound centralized this is a non-centralized event and we invite all too participate in the functions of making this situation manifest. This event is for all of us and more, so please send your questions, comments, ideas, critiques, and concerns to spacieface@gmail.com. Let’s get ideas spiraling.

As there will be no official teacher for the class this is meant for people who are comfortable being self-directed artists. However, if you wish, people of varying skill levels and experience can help and guide each other.

MODELS:
We value diversity so all types of models are encouraged to join regardless of sex, gender, ethnicity, body type. Ideally we would have a good mix of different kinds of models as well as artists
Sundays: 11:00 AM-8:00 PM

Ideally we would like to have a sizable group or groups that meet regularly so that we can make it worthwhile for everyone involved.

If you are interested please let me know:
1. If you are a model, artist, or both
2. You schedule preferences

If you know other people that might be interested please pass this along to them. If you have any further questions please contact me at my email or tribe.

Following police spying, decentralized celebration refuses permission to bring spontaneous parade to Santa Cruz streets

Santa Cruz, CA, December 31st, 2006: Undaunted by civil rights violations last year by the Santa Cruz Police Department, this year's Last Night DIY Parade and Celebration returns in full force to take over the streets.

In your near future: a New Year’s eve parade crammed with jugglers, clowns, samba drums, pirates, bikes, and marching bands. The usual Santa Cruz city-sponsored New Year’s eve event? Hardly. This is Last Night Santa Cruz, a people’s parade, a do-it-yourself celebration that goes beyond the now-defunct First Night event, canceled two years ago due to money problems.

Last year, the celebration erupted into the national headlines when it was discovered that Santa Cruz Police had violated the civil liberties of organizers by spying on their meetings for three months and gathering information about the group and other unrelated activities.

This year, the celebration returns with an unabashedly defiant point-of-view. A manifesto published on the Last Night DIY website states, "Last Night is a decentralized, collective, spontaneous, open, public New Year's Eve celebration, a completely organic event, organized and put on at a grassroots-level." DIY stands for do-it-yourself and the parade boasts no city-sponsorship and no corporate donors.

The Last Night website states, "The parade is not merely a celebration, but a celebration of the power that we all have when we gather together to make something happen. Not just a street party, but a party to reclaim our streets."

This year on New Year's Eve, the celebration will meet at sunset near the Saturn Cafe parking lot on Pacific Ave.

A Brief History of Last Night

Last Night started in 2005 as a response to the implosion of the city-sponsored First Night celebration. Elsewhere that year, the government abandoned millions of poor people in hurricane-ravaged New Orleans, and so Last Night was also a commemoration of the do-it-yourself spirit of those surviving communities.

That year, thousands of people came out to participate in the people’s parade that marched raucously up Pacific Avenue. The parade included the Santa Cruz Trash Orchestra, martial arts displays, firedancers, the Santa Cruz Peace Coalition, Indonesian music, drum circles, floats, and the Opera Lady. The parade was high-energy and peaceful. There were no conflicts with police who’s light presence remained far on the periphery. The parade and it’s organizers represented a broad cross-section of the community.

In a typical overreaction of authority to the threat of people taking responsibility in their own lives, the Santa Cruz Police Department deployed undercover officers to infiltrate parade planning meetings for three months. Records released after the spying scandal came to light, revealed a pattern of abuses, including monitoring unrelated groups and other first amendment activities and compiling police dossiers of organizers. The city's own police auditor determined that police had violated the civil rights of parade organizers. After six months of effort, community, activist, and ACLU involvement, the city put in place a weak policy to curb some of the abuses of police power.

A Decentralized Community Event

Organizers, or "un-organizers" as they prefer to be called, issued a manifesto to make clear the intentions of the Last Night parade, online at the Last Night DIY website at www.lastnightdiy.org. The site also offers history, news, discussion, and press info about the Last Night DIY Celebration.

It is a people's parade and everyone is invited: parents with kids, wayward youth, the homeless, Mexican workers, students, retired people. Get your friends together and bring your creativity to the parade. Build a float or puppets. Bring your friends dressed as clowns. Make music and performance art. Show off your art car. Form a bike gang. Bring your political message because unlike First Night, free speech is encouraged.

The celebration is decentralized -- no one person or group is making it happen. No one is in charge, but those involved in the parade claim they are all leaders. Decisions about tactical matters are made collectively by those willing to step up and make it happen. The paraders are not asking for permits and permission, nor are there any limits on participation. No one is in a position to restrict who can participate or in what way. People simply show up prepared to take part in a city-wide celebration.

Not Seeking Permits

Beyond the impossible barrier of the city's arduous and prohibitively expensive special event permit, the permit process itself is a racket. It is the process through which the city seeks to charge us for the privilege of exercising our rights to free speech and free assembly. Accepting a permit puts someone in the position of having to take responsibility and liability for the actions of others. Parade organizers reject that way of thinking.

The focus is on self-reliance. One of the most important aspects of the Last Night celebration is that people take responsibility for themselves and for their community. As such, parade "un-organizers" take pains to address issues such as security, traffic control, sanitation, clean-up, and police liaison.

The Last Night DIY Parade is not seeking permits from the city. Last Night organizers reason, "When we ask permission to live our lives, to celebrate, to come together, to express dissent, we legitimate the power of institutions over us. We give up our power to make our own choices. We refuse to ask permission to be free."

The Last Night manifesto states, "We want to live in a world full of play and celebration, where self-expression is a matter of course. A world full of surprises, in which relationships are authentic and open-ended. A world in which we share a direct connection to the world around us. Where one does not have to ask permission of authorities to realize one’s dreams of adventure and possibility."

---------------------------------------------
FAQ
---------------------------------------------

*What is The Really REALLY Free Market?

It's like a large community-wide garage sale and festival, except everything is
FREE! Yes, that's right, FREE! Everyone is invitied to bring things to
GIVE
AWAY!

*So this is like bartering or trading, right?
Nope. Bartering and trading go something like this:
I've got this great shirt here, what can you offer me for it?

The RRFM goes something like this: I've got this really great shirt
here. I don't really wear it anymore, but I'd hate to see it go to
waste.
Do you want it? Great! Here, it's yours!

*Why would i want to do a thing like that?
Because you have to many things already! Because you're just going to throw it away anyway. Because it FEELS GOOD!
Do you have things cluttering up your home? Maybe some stuff that you don't use anymore, but you know that someone else would probably love.
One person's trash can truly be another person's treasure!

*What should I bring?
Bring *your thing* to the RRFM, whatever that is! Material goods, food or drinks, a service to provide, a skill you have that you want to teach to others, a performance, or anything else!

*What if I don't have anything to give away?
Everyone has something to give to others. The RRFM isn't just about giving away *stuff.* What is it that you do? Why not come to the RRFM and find a way to do it for others, except this time for free just for the fun of it. As a gift to others, as a gift to yourself. It's a way of reclaiming meaning in your job, to give it as a gift, unmediated by commerce.

*Who runs the RRFM?
Well, the RRFM consists of the sum of its participants. The gift you
bring to the event, helps create what the event is for others, just as what others bring to the event, creates what the event is for you.

That said, there are some folks who came together to help create the structure for the RRFM to work. But it is our hope that soon enough, our role within the RRFM will be the same as everyone else's. That is, that each of us decides our own level of involvement.

The RRFM is yours! Take advantageous of that. Make it what you want it to be! If you want to see something happening at the RRFM that isn't already happening, than make it happen! If you want to see more people coming to the RRFM, help spread the word! Send emails to your friends, make and distribute flyers (make your own or download them from the website), talk to people about the RRFM.
-------------------------------------------------------------

Please help us keep the RRFM a 100% FREE and non-commercial event. Once a month, let's come together and forget about trading, bartering, and money. Leave the business cards at home and remember the joy of giving for the sake of giving.

Help us keep Dolores Park clean. If no one takes what you brought, please bring it home with you.

If you like what you just read, get involved! Come to the RRFM! Bring your own gifts to share! Spread the info, and get more people involved!

The RRFM takes YOU to make it happen.
The spots focus "on the alleged global warming crisis and the calls by some environmental groups and politicians for reduced energy use." The tag line (I am not making this up): "C02: they call it pollution - we call it life".

These badly, badly need to be parodied. Oh, so badly.

I'm looking one or more film/video savvy folks who would be interested in collaborating on some kind funny but politically-charged response to this (and I believe it's possible to do both). I am a composer with a fair amount of film/advertising experience under my belt. I'm also generally handy with sound, and have a lot of contacts in local theatre (so I can dig up actors, voice-over folks, etc.).

My initial aims are modest: a short movie we could send around, put up on websites, etc. If it's successful, perhaps we can push for wider distribution, and if we like working together, perhaps we can crank out a few more. WIth election time coming up, there will be a lot of spin that will want to be countered. Let's start talking back.

Drop me a message if you're interested - thanks!

Détourned Menu: Food in the Form of Activism

Détourned Menu presents a collection of artists who perceive their work as tactical treats, ones that are used to infiltrate contemporary visual culture.

By providing food for thought, as well as something to fill one’s belly, these artists produce work that disrupts the visual and spatial codes of everyday life. The subversive concoctions created for Détourned Menu will demonstrate how food consumption is saturated with additional dimensions of meaning that can be understood as stemming variously from economic, social, ethical, ceremonial, fetishistic or gluttonous concerns ... ideas that move beyond the notion of eating just for survival.

These complex relationships infuse what we choose to eat with political connotations, and the edible provocations thus presented can be understood as being prepared in the spirit of the Situationist term “détournement”, which in translation simply means a “diversion,” hijack - or quite simply to turn a pre-existing meaning on it’s head.

Would you, or anyoneone else you know be interested in running power from a genny out of a van to power up loudspeakers and turntables on the street?

ANON SALON’s SEA OF DREAMS “CIRK-O-SIX”

New Years Eve, Downtown LA
This New Year's Eve, San Francisco and LA based event promoters, ANON SALON are expanding on the long running success of their legendary SEA OF DREAMS New Year's Eve spectacle by raising the bar with this year’s CIRK-O-SIX, to be held at the historic Los Angeles Theater. This year’s burlesque theme combines the party with ongoing theater performances in the famed downtown theatre.

The Los Angeles Theatre was once considered one of the four or five finest theatres in the world and the event will raise the flag of the new Renaissance of downtown Los Angeles and call upon the Golden Era of LA’s Downtown Theatre District where vaudeville and burlesque used to fill its resplendent theatre houses. Anon Salon will bring the history alive with today’s most cutting edge, avant garde performance and burlesque troupes performing in this breathtaking theater with a surrounding labyrinth of party rooms containing Anon’s live and DJ musical favorites.

The theatre built in 1931 in the French baroque style of Louis XIV, was a virtual Hollywood cathedral. Famous for its huge crystal fountain in the lobby, not an inch of the interior was left undecorated from the elegant stage curtains and ornate balcony to the intricately-carved ceiling of its lobby. When the Los Angeles Theatre was about to go under during the Depression, Charlie Chaplin paid an exorbitant amount of money to keep the posh 1,967-seat theater afloat, so that he could have the grand premiere of his masterpiece "City Lights" there. When downtown LA was abandoned for other new neighborhoods and nightlife, the Los Angeles Theatre closed and had been sitting idle, except for occasional film shoots.

Cirk-O-Six will then merge this experience with its audience base of costumed revelers to create a unique and participatory evening of entertainment.

Additionally, there is a full art gallery space attached to one of the downstairs ballrooms that will house a large art exhibit of cirque and burlesque themed works curated by Mike Russek, co-founder of Transport Art Gallery and founder of the Six Degrees Art Festival.

Lighting and an interactive environment will also be created by Los Angeles event and décor wizards, The Do Labs.
HISTORY OF ANON SALON

ANON SALON, over the course of its 15-year existence, has helped redefine West Coast event production by producing hundreds of unique theme parties, theater festivals, art shows and even street fairs for Burning Man fans in both San Francisco and Los Angeles. The company was born out of San Francisco’s alternative art and performance scene of the 1980’s. From the beginning, they helped shape an ever-growing community of multi-media artists and event producers into a network of non-commercial, unadvertised one-off events and large public gatherings. Unlike conventional concert, club or theatrical events, these one-off gatherings were specialized one-of-a-kind theme party/events. Production laden and technologically cutting edge, they included not only music, but also performance artists, installation, lighting and video artists, theatrics and unique décor, that quickly began to attract an audience that brought their own ideas to the mix. The evolution of their party spectacles has always reflected the changing face of the creative community. As their website asserts, "ANON SALON teases technology, embraces the arts, and flirts with the unknown. … It celebrates all that's eclectic and electric in art, design, and media providing a place to grab new ideas before business as usual turns them into formulas.
Anon founders, JOEGH BULLOCK and MARCIA CROSBY have been central to San Francisco's alternative and underground art scene since the late 1970's. Besides ANON SALON, their endeavors include the GlasHaus parties of the mid-1980's, Icon Byte Bar and Grill (the first Internet bar and cafe in SF), the award-winning Climate Theater, the world famous Solo Mio performance festival. More recently, Joegh has co-created and co-produced San Francisco-based Burning Man Festival parties such as Flambé Lounge and the Decompression Heat the Street Faire.

In the early 1990's, they joined forces with then actor/director MARK PETRAKIS, known as “Spoonman” (from his popular alternative vaudeville revues called “COBRA LOUNGE”). An early web developer, already a part of the burgeoning technology scene, Petrakis was also responsible for Telecircus.com, a 1994 San Francisco arts community website that provided the first web presence for Burning Man, the Residents, Clubfoot Orchestra and many others.

Artist, event producer and social provocateur, MARK BAVA from the Monterey and San Francisco Bay Area entered the mix further bringing together audiences from communities from Humboldt to San Diego. Bava is also one of the founders of the LA Burning Man LaDecom Street Fair, Oracle Milleneum and the Blue Bongo nightclub in the Artist District of Downtown Los Angeles.

LA partner and co-producer, Stephen Samojeden is an east coast transplant who got his start in event productions in Colorado in the early Nineties. Working with friends he helped create Sol Productions, which grew to be one of the largest event production companies in the state. More recently he has helped create dozens of alternative art events in the Santa Barbara, Ventura and Los Angeles areas, including the yearly Los Angeles Burning Man Decompression Street Fairs.

Since its debut on NYE 2000, their SEA OF DREAMS event has been known as the must-see sleeper event for the in-the-know “cultural creatives”, attracting over 3,000 attendees each year to the sold out San Francisco events and last year’s LA event.

This New Year’s Eve, the ANON team will once again combine their talents and experience in the raising of Cirk-O-Six.
but my mind is upside down.
I feel like a run-on sentence
in a punctuation crazy world.
and I see the world around me
like a mad collective dream.

An endless stream of people

Morality is legislated
prisons over-populated
religion is incorporated
the profit-motive has permeated all activity
we pay our government to let us park on the street
And war is the biggest money-maker of all
Politicians and prostitutes
I wonder if they talk about the strange change in the weather.
This government was founded by, of, and for the people
but everybody feels it
like a giant open sore
they don't represent us anymore
And blaming the President for the country's woes
is like yelling at a puppet
for the way it sings
Who's the man behind the curtain pulling the strings?

A billion people sitting watching their TV
in the room that they call living
but as for me
I see living as loving
and since there is no loving room
I sit on the grass under a tree
dreaming of the way things used to be
Pre-Industrial Revolution
which of course is before the rivers and oceans, and skies were polluted

before Parkinson's, and mad cows
and all the convoluted cacophony of bad ideas
like skyscrapers, and tree paper, and earth rapers
like Monsanto and Dupont had their way
as they continue to today.

This was Pre-us
back when the buffalo roamed
and the Indian's home
was the forest, and God was nature
and heaven was here and now
Can you imagine clean water, food, and air
living in community with animals and people who care?

Do you dare to feel responsible for every dollar you lay down
are you going to make the rich man richer
or are you going to stand your ground
You say you want a revolution
a communal evolution
to be a part of the solution
maybe I'll be seeing you around

>>so my sister wrote this to stand up for what she believes. the girl is 13 i cant wait to see what comes out of her in college.

Mary had a little lamb,
His fleece was white as snow.
And everywhere that Mary went,
The Lamb was sure to go.

To school the lamb went each day
Though some kids it did bother
Mary cared not of the others
She forced upon them her church father

Ignored was the Bill of rights
Of which the document claims
Not one religion will this country
Solely point the aim

And thus I give not a shit
What the majority of this country believes
For isn’t it in America
Where everyone is free?

So take your god into the church
Where he does belong
And we wont tell you to shut up
When you sing your holy songs.<<

peace

I'd like to create a truly tribal experience, and I think that there's a lot of fun to be had and good things to be accomplished.

The Really Really FREE Market!
Saturday April 30, 2005 12-4pm at Dolores Park

We would love for you to come and offer your special gifts and talents at this event. Full explanation below.

The RRFM is based on the idea of a gift economy, namely that giving feels good; that if we were to all to share what we had, we wouldn’t have less than we have now, we’d actually all have more than we currently have. Giving is a pleasure in itself. Gift others with your clutter. Gift others with your talents. Gift others with your presence!

Bring *your thing* to the event, whatever that is! Material goods, a
service to provide, a skill you have that you want to teach to others, a performance, or anything else!

The Really, Really Free Market consists of the sum of its participants. The gift you bring to the event, helps create what the event is for others, just as what others bring to the event, creates what the event is for you.

This is not an event for bartering. This is not an event to advertise your company or yourself, leave your businesscards at home! It’s about gifting without the expectation of anything in return, and it's about taking without feeling the need to reciprocate to that individual.

Material goods to give: Books, clothing, odds and ends, etc.; healing
arts: massage, reiki, yoga; circus arts (performing and teaching):
juggling, poi, stilts; sports and games: soccer, frisbee, etc.; bicycle
repair; there will also be a kids' space with facepainting, games, and
more; and of course, food!

We are hoping to make this a regular event in San Francisco. The first Really, Really Free Market is being held on:

Saturday April 30, 2005 from 12-4pm at Dolores Park.

If you like what you just read, get involved! Come to the event! Bring your own gifts to share! Spread the info and get more people involved! This event takes YOU to make it happen!

Please respond with your thoughts, ideas, what you plan on bringing to the event, etc.

See you April 30th!

put the troops in harm's way. Now 1,200 brave young Americans and (some

estimate) 100,000 Iraqis have died. The politicians owe our troops a

plan -- a way to come home.

There's no rally to attend. No marching to do. No left or right wing

agenda to rant about. On Not One Damn Dime Day you take action by doing

nothing.

You open your mouth by keeping your wallet closed. For 24 hours,

nothing gets spent, not one damn dime, to remind our religious leaders and

our politicians of their moral responsibility to end the war in Iraq and

give America back to the people

We live in an age of corporate power & dominance, government unaccountability. We need to organise ourselves to let those at the top know we will not stand for the commercialistion of Planet Earth.

It is predicted that unless we change the way we ’re living, we will destroy the Earth and ourselves within the next 1,000 years (Terence McKenna). I don't want to be responsible for the destruction of our planet, and i hope you don't either.
so join up, lets make a difference. Go to http://protestforchange.tribe.net/ , create a profile, and then join protest for change. Our activities will reflect the views of our members, probably starting with a protest against the commercialisation of Christmas

Kerry is now barely leading in Florida (according to some polling data) by a 0.4% margin. He is winning in Oregon, Nevada, New Mexico (barely), and Pennsylvania, too, as of this week.

You can help widen and protect this margin by picking up your phone and using your free weekend and evening cell phone minutes in a few different ways:

Go to:

volunteer.johnkerry.com/profile/new/

sign up as a volunteer, and start making calls to previously-identified Kerry supporters in battleground states, motivating them to sign up for door-to-door voter contact canvasses near their homes. The website interface is very easy and user-friendly. This is really simple, low-stress, and important work.

If you want to call undecided and/or sporadic voters in swing states, do the same as above, and sign up for one of the MANY weekend phone banks in neighborhoods near you, all of which are listed on johnkerry.com.

Phone contact which leads to face-to-face contact is often what makes the difference between an undecided voter and a Kerry voter.

Please do both of these things. Do them now. Get your friends to go do them with you. The election is 13 days away, and if enough people work to make the final push for Kerry, he'll win.

_______________________

*I don't care if you're a Green or a leftie independent voter. I am, too. But I can't stand the thought of another 4 years of Bush, and neither can you. So sit down, close your eyes, make peace with being impure, and then get off your ass and help elect John Kerry.

The Lost Tribe

Part I. Tane’s Choice

Long ago, before the Sheroq set sail across the oceans of Alm and arrived upon the golden shores of Une as conquerors, there were ten tribes on that vast island. They lived peacefully in separate villages, and aside from the trading of goods; they kept to their own separate ways. The Delph and the Sven lived mostly along the winding eastern shorelines, and were skilled with the spear and the net. The Mosk, who built the majestic city of Vale, the trading center for all of Une, lived in the river valley and were also skilled fishers.
The Atea and Bron made their homes on the open fields and green plains of Alm, quietly cultivating the fertile lands. The Rangi, a nomadic tribe who worshipped the sun, lived as herds-keepers amid the dry grasslands in the arid Tombe desert. The Nelv, Teli, and Va were hunters and trappers. They lived deep in the forests and erected their homes suspended high in the air, among the massive ancient trees of Une.
The most mysterious and reclusive of the ten tribes were the Irian, who lived in the remote mountains on the western shore of the isle. They ate neither beasts nor creatures of the waters, and would venture down from their mountain city only twice a year, traversing the long and arduous roads that led to Vale, where they traded their unique and ponderous tools for vegetables, dried fruits, seed, and grain. The Irian were well admired by the other tribes for their ingenuity and unparalleled craftsmanship, although the superstitious Rangi distrusted the Irian for their strange mode of dress and quiet aloof conduct.
The Rangi were a tribe famous for their shamans. Their skills in the healing arts were held in high esteem, and they offered assistance to any islander whom had need of their service. Among all the island tribes, the Irian were the sole tribe never to take their sick to a Rangi healer. These shamans were well respected, but also feared due to the strange powers they were rumored to possess. In addition to their healing abilities, they were believed by many to be capable of reading men’s minds. It has also been said that the shamans of the Rangi learned and could speak aloud The First Language, that of common beasts and birds of flight, and so had power over them. This was why they were such successful herdsmen, or so many on the great isle believed.
Of all the powerful shamans to ever rise to glory from the ranks of the Rangi, Tane the Wise, also known as Mahala, the Gifted One, remains the most famous and beloved. Tane was born on a frigid early morning amid the windswept dunes of the desert region called Saty. His birth coincided with a lunar eclipse the inhabitants of Une call the Night of Silence. The eclipse, which took place only once every eighty-four cycles, was a sacred event and all the tribes of Une spent the night solemnly observing the disappearance and return of that lonesome white orb. Many among the Rangi looked upon the synchronicity of Tane’s birth and the simultaneous reappearance of the moon from behind the Cloud of Po with wonder, awe, and a tinge of foreboding.
Tane’s mother, Celelial, wife of Vull, chief of the Rangi tribe, died the moment of Tane’s birth. Because it is primarily women folk who raise the tribe’s children until they reach the age of passage and declare their calling, Tane became the child of all mothers of the clan, but was especially favored by the tribe’s shaman, the wizened and venerable Mother Kore. It was she who had concocted and administered the mixture of ahmk cream, fresh herbs, and dru root that was fed to Tane as an infant in substitution for his mother’s milk, and it was within her small hut that he had slept until his eleventh cycle, when it was required he join the other young men of his tribe in the Seekers Cabin. Even then, he often took refuge within her modest dwelling, located on the western outskirts of the only permanent Rangi settlement, Endu, which was nestled between the high sandstone walls of outer Tombe and the muddy banks of the spindly Spider River.
As he grew, Tane learned much from Mother Kore, and showed signs of becoming a gifted healer. He was a quiet, independent child, more comfortable with animals than with people. He had great skill directing the ahmk herds, and was often called upon when the creatures became skittish, for his mere presence was often enough to calm the beasts. As the years passed, Tane’s father watched his maturation with burgeoning pride, taking comfort in the thought that Tane would succeed him as chief. After the death of Celelial, Vull had taken a new wife, Maleo, who honored him with two children; first a dark eyed son named Chambu, who grew to be strong and proud, then a daughter, Tiki; a beautiful, thoughtful, fiery girl utterly devoted to Tane. Although Vull offered love to each of his children, it was obvious to all that he favored Tane, and this caused a hidden resentment to grow within the heart of Chambu.

By the time of his eighteenth sun cycle, Tane was highly regarded among his people, being both the eldest son of the Rangi chief and the sole familiar of his tribe’s revered shaman. The time of Tane’s Passage Ceremony was soon to come and the entire Endu settlement was buzzing with excitement. Every cycle, a new group of seekers declared their calling, and this was always followed by a jubilant celebration. In anticipation of his son’s ascension to Chief-In -Waiting, Vull had ordered the plans for this years feast to be grander then any that had come before. Tane disliked the amount of attention he was receiving, which at times bordered on adulation. He grew weary of life in the Seeker’s Cabin, where so many of his peers had taken to fawning over him in an attempt to gain his favor. The more friendly and sycophantic his fellow seekers became, the more isolated Tane felt. He began to eschew their companionship, preferring to spend his time alone wandering the dry grasslands, occasionally stopping to assist those who tended to the ahmk.
One unseasonably warm spring afternoon, when the Rangi herds-keepers had left their flocks and temporarily taken shelter from the sweltering sun within a nearby cave, Tane filled two gut-sacks full of water for the herd, and began walking the down the steep, winding trails that led to the field where the ahmk were grazing. As he rounded a corner he came upon his bother Chambu, violently beating and kicking a stray calf. His brother clung tightly to the long curly fleece of the animal’s neck as it cried out in terror. Forcing its head downward with his left forearm, he used his free right hand to thrash the calf about the head and snout, while repeatedly kicking its rear leg and flank. Tane stood motionless, momentarily transfixed and mute, watching the senseless beating with horror. After a moment he heard the shrieking of a scavenger bird flying directly overhead, and the shrill tone of it’s call startled him from his stupor. He forcefully raised his voice to his brother.
“Chambu!” he yelled, “Stop it, now!
Chambu halted and turned to face his brother. His face, dripping with grimy sweat, was colored deep scarlet and contorted with rage. He stared back at Tane, silent and defiant.
“What are you doing here?” asked Tane. “Why were you abusing this defenseless calf? Answer me!”
“You don’t command me,” Chambu hollered. “You’re not the chief yet. You’re just a seeker, like me. “
Tane ignored his brother’s outburst, and setting down the heavy water sacks on a flat slate of stone, he walked over to the frightened ahmk, which stood cowering near a low clump of thorn-covered scrub. He crouched down beside the animal, carefully checking over its wounds. The calf’s bottom lip was torn and bleeding, and one eye was swollen shut. It held its rear right hind leg suspended several inches above the ground and bleated in pain when Tane searched the appendage for a break in the bone. Once he was certain that the creature would live he stood up beside her and began softly petting the fur-covered area between the calf’s ears while speaking what seemed, to Chambu, to be gibberish words. Then, with his tongue pressed between his teeth, he sounded a short clicking noise while pointing his finger in the direction of the herd. The calf hesitated, then slowly turned and hobbled off to rejoin the other ahmk. Tane watched it for a moment, and then turned back once more to face his brother, who stood leaning against a low rock wall, scowling at the ground.
“Why?” he asked simply, steadfastly waiting for a response.
When Chambu finally spoke his voice had risen in pitch, taking on a defensive tone.
“The herders were overheated and needed a break,” blurted Chambu. “I had just arrived and so I told them to go rest while I watched. After everyone had gone to the caves, that stupid beast started wandering off. I called it back but it wouldn’t listen to me. I couldn’t watch it and the herd, so I tired to push it back, but then it bit me. Look what it did to my fingers,” he cried, raising his swollen hand.
“ It could not have injured you too deeply. I saw you strike it with that hand,” Tane replied grimly.
“But, but, it wouldn’t listen…” stammered Chambu.
“Brother,” said Tane, ”What you have done here is wrong. It is worse than wrong, it’s evil. It is not the Rangi way. It dishonors our family and brings shame to our tribe. We are caretakers to the ahmk. They are sacred creatures, gentle and wise. You know we’re not to hurt to them needlessly.”
“I didn’t mean to,” replied Chambu weakly. “I just got mad when it bit me.”
“That calf may be lame for the rest of its life because you couldn’t control your temper. Do you know what the herd-keepers would do to you if they discovered your deed? It’s a crime, what you’ve done.”
“Are you, you don’t mean to tell them, do you?” asked Chambu in terror.
Tane paused for a moment, and looked downward considering the question. If he revealed what he knew to the tribe elders, his brother would receive a beating in return for his cruel act. It seemed to him that this would heal neither the calf, nor his brother. He spoke without raising his head.
“Go, and speak of this to no one,” said Tane.
“Ha! Thank you brother, thank you so much,” cried Chambu, relieved to be getting away without punishment.
“Do not thank me,” replied Tane with fervor. “Go you now to the river and throw yourself full in. Ask the water to wash this foul anger from your soul and carry it away. Be gone!”
Chambu’s cheeks burned hot with shame. He turned quickly, hurrying down the dusty path that led back to the main encampment. Tane watched him leave with a heavy heart. “This is not a good sign,” he thought to himself with a sigh. Tane walked slowly over to the large smooth rock where his water bags lay. Reaching down, he grabbed the discarded skins and flung them over his shoulders. Then he headed up the hillside to offer the ahmk herd a drink from the river.
Tane waited with the flock until the herds-keepers returned. When they arrived, he pointed out the injured ahmk so that they might watch it with special care, since an injured calf was more likely to be attacked by the desert’s nocturnal predators, the vicious and deadly vilstrak. When the keepers asked if him if he knew how the calf had come to harm Tane told them he had found it injured when he arrived, which was true. He lingered among them for several hours, laughing at their jokes and listening to their tales. As dusk approached, and the light of the setting sun drenched the sky in brilliant shades of magenta, Tane bid the herds-keepers farewell and began his journey home.
As he meandered down the dusty trails that led back to Endu, Tane fell into a dark mood. The Seeker’s Cabin would be bustling with activity in preparation for tomorrow’s ceremony. He dreaded the eager stares he would receive at the evening feast. He felt trapped by their expectations and wanted only to be left alone. Things would be so much simpler if I had been born the son of a herds-keeper, thought Tane, then no one would care what I did with my life. When he reached the narrow stone passageway near the north entrance of the village, he was suddenly startled from his reverie by the sound of movement on the path up ahead. He rounded the corner and saw someone walking straight towards him, approaching from the village. Tane looked downward and continued forward briskly. When they were only a few feet away from each other he sensed the person advancing upon him was slowing. Tane kept his eyes focused on the ground and maintained his brisk pace, hoping whoever it was would allow him to pass without speaking.
“Deep in thought brother,” asked a young female voice chidingly.
He looked up and saw his sister looking back at him, smiling sardonically.
“Tiki,” he exclaimed, returning her smile. “What are you doing out here?”
“Looking for you, obviously,” she said tersely. “And what’s with you trying to pass me like I wasn’t there?”
“I didn’t know it was you. I don’t feel like talking to anybody tonight,” he replied, looking away towards the settlement.
Tiki took a step back, gently folded her arms across her chest, and leaned her back against a high stone outcropping. She was a short girl, with dark amber eyes and straight shining brown hair she wore pulled back into a long ponytail. Her skin was perfectly bronzed by long days of play in the sunshine and although she was only beginning to show the signs of a woman’s blossoming, she had already attracted the attention of many suitors. Tiki, however, was still a child at heart, and was only interested in spending time with her brother Tane.
“So what did you do today,” she asked him. “Did you see Chambu out there? He came back early from the grazing lands and was in the worst mood. He wouldn’t talk to anyone. He went straight to the cabin and sulked there all day.”
Tane felt a guilty tugging in his chest. He usually shared everything with Tiki and knew he could trust his sister with any secret, but he did not feel like recounting the story to her. He turned away, pretending to see something of interest down the path.
“I don’t know,” he replied blandly.
Tiki cocked her head to one side and considered her brother for a moment. They were especially close to one another and she always knew when he was attempting to conceal his worry.
“What’s wrong Tane,” she asked sweetly, reaching up to brush the hair back from his eyes.
“Nothing,” he replied. “I’m just, uhm, tired.”
She did not force the issue. Instead, she stood up on her tiptoes and gently laid a kiss upon his cheek. He smiled then, and taking her hands in his, he leaned forward resting his forehead against her own. They stood this way silent for almost a minute, then he released her hands and stood up straight again. She looked up at him, positively beaming, and they turned together walking in the direction of the village.
“So lets go to dinner. The feast should be ready by now,” she suggested.
“Uh, I’m not really hungry,” he replied. “I feel like being alone tonight Tiki. I need time to think. I’ll sit with you tomorrow after the ceremony.”
“You promise,” she asked disappointedly.
“Yes,” he said.
“But do you swear it,” she begged emphatically.
“I swear, you little sand beetle,” he laughed, reaching out and gently slapping her rear end.
They had reached the entrance to Endu. Tane took hold of Tiki’s hand, giving a quick squeeze. Then he released her and set off in the direction of the Spider River. Tiki stopped walking and watched him go.
“See you tomorrow,” she called after him.
“Tomorrow then,” he said looking back as he reached the end of a row of huts, turned to his left, and disappeared from view

The eve of Tane’s passage was upon him, and he sat on the thatched flooring of Mother Kore’s hut, absentmindedly chewing on a piece of gumn root, contemplating his future. He knew that most tribe members were anxiously abiding his Passage Ceremony, and there was much speculation among them concerning his avowal. As the eldest son of the Rangi chief, he was, by right, the next leader in waiting. Were he to forego this cherished honor, his half brother Chambu would most likely take his place as chief, and this Tane did not want, for though he loved his brother, Chambu was often rash in his reactions and reckless in his actions. “What kind of chief would beat an ahmk,” Tane wondered.
For most, there would be no uncertainty as to the path to take. The appointment to Chief of the Rangi was the greatest honor any tribesmen could be bestowed. Yet within Tane’s mind an unnamed doubt hung heavy upon him, pulling on his thoughts with the weight of some yet unrealized truth. His prominent brow screwed up into a furrow as he searched for the answer that eluded him.
As he brooded, slumping in a corner of the hut, Mother Kore returned from the evening feast. Pulling back the ahmk-skin hide from the doorway she entered the dimly lit room. She moved slowly across the floor and placed a bundle of herbs on the Mosk crafted wooden shelf behind Tane. She was tall and slight, with long thick white hair and luminous green eyes. She smiled at Tane who sat cross-legged on the woven tapestry floor.
“You look troubled today my son,” she said mildly.
Tane stood up and walked over to the low burning embers he had first stoked at nightfall. His voice cracked with emotion.
“Tomorrow I must stand before the village and declare my way,” he replied with an edge that revealed his apprehension.
Mother Kore crossed the open space between them and settled down beside him before the small fire. She smiled as she spoke to him in a calming tone.
“So you shall. There is nothing to fear in that, so long as you speak truly.”
He rose and began to pace to and fro. His wrung his hands as he did so, reaching almost a state of panic.
“Nothing to fear? I wish it were so, but I believe otherwise. I have had dark intimations of this day mother. I sense somehow that matters of great import rest upon my decision, and still I know not what I must. I don’t know which way to go. Tell me what to do, please mother,” he implored her.
She watched him with a compassionate stare as a quiet emptiness filled the air. He looked into her eyes and was suddenly called back to himself. Fear and panic slowly subsided as he returned her unwavering glance. He moved himself towards the light and warmth of her hearth, and settled down beside her, silent. For a time, they spoke no words as both gazed steadily into the burning coals.
“Listen Tane,” said Mother Kore after a long silence. “I cannot choose for you. You must find the answers for yourself, within yourself.”
“But how,” he pleaded.
“You must go to the source. The true essence of things is changeable, yet remains unchanged. Thus, the broad and open path appears to be lacking in direction. To travel such a road one must give up his destination, relinquish the illusion of control, and follow the pull of his inner currents.”
“But without a direction, how will I know the way to go?” he asked.
“In the beginning, you do not know. You wander blindly through unknown lands until you discover what has always been obvious. A skilled wanderer leaves no trace, does not fear his own end, and has no thought for honors. See the wood in my hearth? It embraces the flames that destroy it. We are like that wood, young one. We are here to be used, our substance vanquished, our forms undone. In losing mastery one gains the freedom to disrobe.”
“I hear and do not hear, mother,” Tane said quietly.
“You hear,” she returned without pause. “Sleep now. You need to rest.”
“And how am I supposed to do that,” he asked gloomily.
“Just be still. Release your self from this phantom doubt. It is only the shadow of your mind’s futile clinging to certainty. Tomorrow, when you awake, all will be clear to you.”
Mother Kore rose then, and without another word, crossed the floor to the rear end of the hut silently pulling back the curtains of her sleeping area.
Tane lay quietly before the fire, considering the words of the old shaman. It embraces the flames that destroy it. He imagined himself a bit of kindling, set ablaze at the bottom of a fire pit. Instead of being troubled by this image he was somehow comforted, and soon, in spite of himself, he relaxed and drifted off into the mysterious realm of dreams.

Summer Leadership Institute: Becoming a Social Artist

Dear Friends,

My old friend and mentor, the great anthropologist Margaret Mead, once offered the famous words, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”

You are invited to become part of such a group by participating in the third summer training program designed to define and create a new kind of leader: a leader who is also a Social Artist.
My work with leadership all over the world has convinced me that too many of the problems in society today, stem, in part, from leadership that is ill-prepared to deal with present complexity. This is not just a matter of inadequate training in the realities of global change, but even more tragically, a lack of human resourcefulness, leaders living out of a field of awareness that is both limited and limiting in their abilities to deal with the world as it is today. Worldwide, societies are crying for assistance in the transformation of their citizens, organizations and institutions. The preparation of leaders who can rise to this challenge is hampered by training that leaves the greatest of the student’s natural resources unexplored and insufficient. The leader, like most of society, emerges as a highly compromised version of what he or she could be. And the state of the world reflects this in a most dangerous way. Few have been trained for the task of dealing with the complexity and chaos of today’s world, while at the same time the usual formulas and stopgap solutions born of an earlier era will not help us. As Albert Einstein reminded us, the consciousness that created the problem cannot be the same consciousness that solves it.

The need to train leaders in a completely new way is critical. The density and intimacy of the global village and the staggering consequences of our new knowledge and technologies make us directors of a world that has, up to now, mostly directed us. The need, the urgency upon us is to develop the possible human in a possible society.

This is an invitation for us to become stewards of the planet filled with a passion for the possible and to partner one another through the greatest social transformation ever known, where we will learn to bring a new mind to bear upon social change. The need for such a program as this could not be greater and factors unique in human history indicate an enveloping critical mass to begin such work as this.

Who are Social Artists? If you are reading this letter, chances are that you are already becoming a Social Artist: someone who seeks innovative solutions to today’s troubling conditions, and who is a lifelong learner, ever hungry for insights, skills, imaginative ideas, and deeper understanding of present-day issues. Above all, someone determined to give everything you are and know to creating a difference in the world.

How are Social Artists created? Through intellectual, physical, emotional and cultural exploration within a form that is sensory-rich and experience-laden and through training that calls forth the whole mind of the whole person.

Participants will
ÿ Develop a wide range of innate, but previously undiscovered, human capacities; ÿ Create innovative solutions to critical issues confronting their communities and societies; ÿ Formulate models of change that can be utilized in a broad range of social institutions; ÿ Redefine the concepts of leadership for today’s complex world.

These questions will be addressed:
ÿ How do I need to grow?
ÿ How might I develop a fuller use of my potential?
ÿ What skills, qualities, and talents do I have that deserve expression?
ÿ How might such expression make the world a better place?
ÿ How do I expand my vision and courage to serve my community?
ÿ What are my finest leadership skills?
ÿ How can I serve effectively?
ÿ How can I awaken to the many cultures of my life?
ÿ How can I utilize forgotten capabilities?
ÿ How can I learn and remember new forms for a civil society?
ÿ How can I become an authentic agent for change?
ÿ What do I need to know in order to step forward as a Social Artist and leader in this chaotic and complex time?

A group of distinguished teachers will join me in presenting the following modules of study and experience. (See biographies below)

ÿ The Social Artist in the World Today
Social Artistry is the essence of the program and we therefore need to understand fully its history, theoretical rootedness, varied definitions and roles of Social Artists in varied cultures. What is it about Social Artistry that is different from the facilitator or catalyst of social change? Given current need in a time of whole system transition the role of the Social Artist takes on dramatic and complex forms. What follows is a description of the social artist in the 21st Century, and the skills necessary to accomplish their agenda. It is to be hoped that this module will help train the learner in some if not all of these abilities:

The Social artist is able to move between cultures, with the ability to enter each other’s belief systems, cultural styles, energizing stories and rituals.
They learn to be informed on world issues in the context of different cultures, and not just from the point of view of a particular nation or policy.

The social artist has the tools to help people to work in collaborative networks and move away from hierarchies and power structures. He or she is one who helps cultures and organizations move from patriarchy to partnership, from dominance by one economic culture or group to circular investedness, sharing and partnership.

Additionally, the social artist is the one who presents a model for a constantly learning society. As a paradigm pioneer, the social artist is able to see trends and the emergence of new patterns out of apparent chaos. He or she demonstrates that different times require a revolution in management styles. The social artist shows even the most hierarchical and bureaucratically based organization that the inevitable movement in a world as complex as ours is to circular organizations. The successful new or renewed organizations will look like a series of circles everywhere. The social artist creates and uses effective multifunctional groups pulled out from all levels of the pyramid and formed into clusters, task forces, or problem solving teams.

The social artist will be able to help members of the culture or organization to preserve the genius of the culture even as they move it into the new story. In business for example with mergers and acquisitions slapped together, and in countries with huge immigrations coming in to upset the given cultural styles, the new story has to do with appreciating the diversity and complexity of the 'new brew'. This means deep appreciation and cross cultural understanding of the stories of the representative cultures, be it the Maoris and the Anglos in New Zealand, or the stories that inform the several corporate cultures that have joined in a merger. Together they make for a whole new story. Often the larger picture or story will help the movement out of a static reality. This is where the consideration on an overarching story or new myth is of the greatest importance.

This so-called new management model is really an old method, one that has been practiced with success in native and aboriginal cultures around the world.
The beauty of a multi-windowed task force is that it gives each member multiple frames of understanding. Multiple frames, many participants, mutuality and connection--an ad hocracy rather than a bureaucracy--lead to solutions that are of the moment and that work for the times. With these techniques, the social artist helps groups focus on what is emerging collectively as the vision, the mission and guiding principles behind the new culture.

It is especially important that the social artist learns the appropriate skills of fundraising, skills vested in integrity and in the boldness of their mission.

The social artist understands the larger nature of timing and of kairos, the potent time when things can happen, as well as those times when things must go fallow, move inward and allowed to gestate. Thus the social artists understands when not to be a social artist. From this study of the social artist the other modules of this program naturally proceed.

ÿ Human Capacities Training and Development The last thirty years has seen a revolution in the understanding and application of the human potential. Part of this understanding comes from scientific research and part from cross-cultural studies. Students will learn to apply a portion of the inventory of human capacities as they have developed around the world under different environmental and social conditions. How Africans walk and think and celebrate spirit, how the Chinese teach and study and paint, how the Inuit experience vivid three dimensional inner imagery, how the Balinese learn to perform any manner of artistic endeavor so rapidly and with such high craft, how a tribe along the Amazon raises happy and nonneurotic children, why certain children in India raised amidst traditional music develop extraordinary skill in mathematics--these are capacities no longer limited to place and culture. In this new world of hybrid vigor, all these potent
